Chang Nyeong, Korea – Oct 16. marked the last day of the 2nd Asian University Road Cycling Championship, when the Individual Road Race started at 13:00 with 40 riders registered. Finally, the Champion went to Tokuda Suguru, from Japan Kanoya University, 30 seconds ahead of the Runner-up, Sainbayar Jambaljamts from Mongolia. Bronze medal went to Ishihara Yuki from Japan Juntnedo team.
Today, the rain greeted all the riders from early morning till the end of championship, which brought difficulty and danger to them. Due to the heavy raining, it was approved that the race courses was reduced from 5 laps of 110km to 3 laps of 70km considering the safety of all the riders. Finally, 20 of 40 riders finished the race. Due to the slippery road, some of riders fell down but struggled to continue the following race.
After the neutralization, all the riders sped up, with the riders from Japan, Korea and Mongolia taking the leading. During the first two lap, the 6 chasers in the main bunch tried to attack the peloton but were caught. The first two riders, Tokuda Suguru from Japan and Sainbayar Jambaljamts, remained the leading at the very beginning till the end. Till the last lap, the two stayed in the leading group together. In the last 20km, Tokuda Suguru started to accelerate and kept the advantage of 30 seconds till the end, winning the Champion.
The Awarding Ceremony started at 18:30. Japan teams brought back the golden medals of Criterium Individual, Criterium Team and Individual Road Race, becoming the biggest winner of this championship.
After the Awarding Ceremony, the Closing Ceremony started. In his closing speech, AUSF Vice President Mr. CHEN Kunning expressed the heartfelt appreciation to the Organizing Committee again, on behalf of AUSF. He also congratulated the riders on their wonderful performance. He said, “in the competition, not only the medals but also the experience should be treasured”. Mr. LEE Yong Woo, President of Korean University Cycling Federation, also congratulated the riders on their achievements. He said that it was the participants who made this championship such a wonderful and successful event. He hoped that cycling sport event could have a bright future in the university level.
This Championship is not only the platform of competition, but also a bridge for friendship. Hope more teams could join the 3rd Asian University Road Cycling Championship in 2017!
