Round Table on Gender Equality Sport 05 Jul 2017 | in Working Meeting

Costa Rica - on 13 June 2017, a round table titled “Sport, a necessary tool to achieve an inclusive society for women” was held in Costa Rica. The activity gathered more than 100 women and men involved in sports and gender activism, organizations leaders, professionals, students of Physical Education, athletes and related areas.
“This convergence was facilitated with the objective of sharing ideas and relevant actions on the promotion of gender equality in national sports, and also to create an encounter of the main programmes currently developed so they can get to know each other and collaborate”, said Rosaura Méndez, FISU Assessor, Chair of the FISU Gender Equality Committee and a member of the Organizing Committee of the event.

At the end of the event, three female athletes were recognized for representing the country's women in sports: Boxing World Champion Hanna Gabriels, European League Champion Shirley Cruz and sports leader Clemencia Conejo.

Although gender equality arouses more and more attention, thanks to women’s activeness in universal affairs, it could be seen that there is still a long way in front of this career. In the hope to increase the proportion of women involved in university sport and to promote better gender balance in academia, FISU takes a lot of initiatives, one of which is to launch “FISU Gender Equality-Sport Award”.

In 2017, the Award will be presented to the representative of the nominating FISU Member Federation at the next Summer Universiade in August 2017 in Taipei city, Chinese Taipei .
