4 Medals for Team TPE 20 Sep 2019 | in Championships

New Taipei, Chinese Taipei –As the host of 1st AUC Badminton, Chinese Taipei achieved commendable results during this championship. They reached three finals and were eventually rewarded with four medals including one gold medal for women’s singles, two silver medals for men’s and women’s doubles, and one bronze medal for men’s singles.

As the first local player to on court in the finals on 20th September, Wen-Chi Hsu ensured at least one gold medal for the host by defeating Joo-eun KIM (KOR) in two straight games 21-19 21-13. “I’m glad to win the gold medal in the end and also realised that I am making small improvements in the international competitions,” said Hsu.

For men’s and women’s doubles finals, the ending was less fortunate for Chinese Taipei. Chiao-Yun Liu and Yu-Qiao Wang had a great chance to win the first game against their Chinese opponents when they won ten successive points from 8-19 to 18-19. However, they eventually bowed out to the more resilient pair of Peng Du/Bo-wen Ni (CHN) in 19-21 and 15-21. Both Liu and Wang acknowledged their shortcomings and vowed to improve in the future. Nevertheless they were very touched by the cheers and support from the home supporters during the match.

On the other hand, Young-Sheng Lin and Ming-Tse Yang had an extremely tough match against Hao-tian Wan/Hao-nan Xie (CHN) in the 21-17 15-21 25-27 defeat. Although they lost, Yang believed that he and his partner did their best. It was just a case of the better team won on the day.

In preparation for this championship, the Chinese Taipei players were selected from the winners of the domestic university intercollegiate games. Coach Chia-Min Wang affirmed the delegation’s overall performance and he especially praised the high skill level of the foreign players. “In some key moments, our players still lacked experience but this will in no doubt improve with time,” said Coach Wang.

Though the 1st AUC Badminton has successfully ended, the second edition of the championship will be upon us in two years and it will once again be hosted by Chinese Taipei. With the inclusion of a team event in 2021, we can expect to see more participation which will certainly raise the overall standard of the competition.
