Japan's Yamato Matsui won the titles in the Men's 500m and Men's 1000m of World University Speed Skating Championship 13 Mar 2020 | in Championships

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLAND – 2020 FISU World University Speed Skating Championship officially kicked off with the Opening Ceremony on 9th March in Amsterdam, Netherland. 70 participants from 16 countries battled it out for the title of world university speed skating champion.
 
With a time of 35.73 seconds, Japan’s Yamato Matsui set a ne
w best time in the Men’s 500m on 11th March. Just behind him in 35.84 seconds was Ignat Golovatjuk from Belarus, with Japan taking the final medal of the day with Wataru Morishige finishing third in 36.32.


 
The Men’s 1000m largely follo
wed the script from 500m. Again it was Yamato Matsui from Japan who managed to pull off the win before Ignat Golovatjuk from Belarus and Viktor Lobas from Russia. Yamato won with a new track record performance of 1.13.14 while Golovatjuk and Lobas also dove under the old mark with 1.13.26 and 1.13.45 performances, respectively.


 
The fourth and final day of the championship were cancelled due to the rapidly developing situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
