Ladies From India and Iran Dominates AUC Chess 09 Sep 2021 | in Chess

Gold for India! The Indian team kept up their advantage from the previous days and clinched both the individual and team titles to wrap up the womens category of 2021 Asian University Chess Championship (AUCC).

In the 9 rounds of individual competition, WGM Varshini Velavan of India established an early lead, was unbeaten and finished with 7.5 points. She was followed by an Iranian player, Safoura Ghani, who claimed the silver with 7 points. Both were making their first appearance in the event. Safoura’s  fellow team mater, WFM Tannaz Azali finished in third place with 6.5 points with a better tie break score.

Indian and Iranian players took the top 5 positions of the individual rankings, ending up dominating the team competition with 25.5 points and 25 points respectively. The Malaysian team took the bronze with 21 points and a better tie score break over the host Indonesia.

After the women’s competition, the mens category will be from September 10th to 12th.
