AUC Chess 2021-Double Celebration for India 15 Sep 2021 | in Chess

After some intense competitions, the online victory and closing ceremonies for 2021 Asian University Chess Championship (AUCC) came to an end on September 14th.

 

Captain of India, GM Abhimanyu Puranik, was crowned men’s individual champion with 7.5 points while IM Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia finished 2nd with 7 points. Both players were outstanding with straight victories in the last three rounds. Liu Chang (CHN) kept the 3rd position with 6.5 points, defeating last year’s winner Seyed Khalil Mousavi (IRI) and his fellow team mate Chen Qi (CHN) by a better tie break score.

 

Puranik led his teammates to top the team competition with 24 points. Together with the title won by the ladies, India took the first place of both categories. Iran finished 2nd with 22.5 points and Malaysia 3rd in the final standings.

 

As the first collaboration with the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) after signing the MOU, AUSF hopes to further promote the sport across Asian universities following the success of AUCC 2021.

At the closing ceremony, AUSF Assessor and CISCA Chair Mr. Purna Singh Bohara highlighted the strong cooperation between AUSF and ACF. He said “Chess is a mind sport welcomed by Asian youths. AUSF will use this experience to encourage more youths to join future editions of the competition, whether online or otherwise. ACF General Secretary Mr. Hisham Al Taher hopes that AUCC can help to take chess to greater heights in Asia.

Representing the Organizing Committee, Prof. Dr. E.S. Margianti, SE. thanked the support from associated federations, as well as all participants for giving their best performances. IUSF President Prof. Aris Junaidi again expressed his gratitude for being appointed to hold the event during the pandemic, and hopes Indonesia is able to involve in more sports following the hosting of such university events.
