The mission of AUSF is formally defined under Article 3 of the Constitution, serving as the foundation for all activities and programmes.
The origins of AUSF date back to 1989, during the World University Games in Duisburg, Germany, where university sports leaders from nine Asian countries explored the idea of regional collaboration.
Subsequent preparatory meetings were held:
These discussions led to the drafting of the AUSF Constitution and governance framework.

Since then, AUSF has expanded steadily, strengthened its institutional foundation, affiliated with FISU, and established a permanent Secretariat in Beijing.
AUSF envisions a united Asian university sports community where sport serves as a powerful bridge between cultures, nations, and generations — nurturing excellence, integrity, and lifelong friendship through education and competition.
