The 8th Asian University 3×3 Basketball Championship Kicked off in Putuo

The opening ceremony of the 8th Asian University 3×3 Basketball Championship took place at Putuo Gymnasium in Zhoushan on the evening of June 12. A total of 23 teams from 9 countries and regions across Asia entered the competition, including 13 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams.

Mr. Sami A. Garabedian, assessor of Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF), CISCA Chair of the 8th Asian University 3×3 Basketball Championship, and Mr. Xu Weibo, Chair of the Organizing Committee and Secretary of Putuo District Committee of Zhoushan City, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.Mr. Liu Baoping, Vice President of the Federation of Chinese University and School Sports (FOCUSS), officially declared the championship open.

The opening match saw the men’s basketball team of Guangdong University of Technology take on that of Hong Kong Metropolitan University. Both sides engaged in a fierce contest from the opening tip-off. In the end, Guangdong University of Technology claimed a 21-10 victory with its outstanding performance on both offense and defense.

The Asian University 3×3 Basketball Championship stands as the highest-level and most influential continental exclusive tournament for university 3×3 basketball across Asia. Teams advancing from this event will earn eligibility to compete in the FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball.

This year marks Putuo’s third consecutive year hosting the championship. The event has not only stoked a nationwide fervor for mass sports and fitness, but also further burnished its well-established reputation as an “Island City of Competitive Sports Events”.
