2026 Asian University Table Tennis Championship Kicks Off in Malaysia
KUANTAN, Pahang, Malaysia – September 7, 2026 — The 2026 Asian University Table Tennis Championship officially opened at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) on September 6. Hosted in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia, the tournament will run from September 5 to 11, bringing together university table tennis talents across Asia.
A total of 96 athletes and officials representing 10 Asian countries and regions have gathered to take part in this continental university table tennis event.
Mr. Chiang Chai Liang, Secretary General of the ASEAN University Sports Council, delivered a welcoming address on behalf of the tournament organizing committee. He extended a sincere and warm welcome to all guests, athletes and officials who traveled from afar, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to AUSF and UMPSA for its tremendous efforts and meticulous arrangements in hosting and organizing the championship. He emphasized that the championship is far more than a competition for rankings and results. More importantly, it serves as a valuable bridge for young student-athletes to make friends, deepen mutual understanding and strengthen sports exchanges among Asian universities.
Mr. Ha Woong Yong, Treasurer of AUSF and CISCA Chair of the event, also spoke at the ceremony. On behalf of AUSF, he expressed sincere appreciation to the local organizing committee and UMPSA for their dedicated preparation and professional organization. He noted that table tennis is one of the most popular and influential sports across Asia. AUSF is committed to building more high-level sports competition platforms for university student-athletes in Asia. He hoped that all participating athletes could enjoy the competition, showcase their sportsmanship and athletic prowess, and take this opportunity to experience and explore the diverse local culture of Malaysia. 
Mr. Sri Mohd Shahar bin Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Economy of Malaysia, officially declared the 2026 Asian University Table Tennis Championship open, kicking off the official competition phase of the event.
The opening ceremony featured vibrant local Malaysian dance and song performances, showcasing rich local cultural heritage and setting a festive tone for the competition ahead.
Following the conclusion of the opening ceremony, the General Technical Meeting was held immediately, during which the draw ceremony for team event groupings took place to finalize the team divisions. Over the next three days, athletes will compete fiercely in both individual and team events, showcasing exquisite table tennis skills and youthful vitality on the court.
As an important continental university sports event, the 2026 Asian University Table Tennis Championship aims to deepen sports exchanges and cooperation among universities in Asian countries and regions, consolidate profound friendship among young Asian athletes, and further promote mutual understanding, inclusiveness and solidarity across Asia through the power of sports.
